A Study of Postoperative Pain Relief after Epidural Anesthesia with a Small Dose of Morphine


Abstract
In an attempt to relieve postoperative pain after lumbar epidural and caudal anesthesia, a small dose of morphine with lidocaine was administered into the lumber epidural and caudal space.
Epidural and caudal anesthesia was done in 45 cases from May. 1 trough Oct. 31, 1982. These cases were divided into 3 groups.
Control group: Epidural or caudal injection of 1.5% lidocaine 20-30ml. were given to 15 patients.
2nd group and 3rd group: Epidural or caudal injection of 2.0mg. and 3.0 mg. morphine mix with 1.5% lidocaine 20-30m1. were given to each 15 patients. The results of this study were as Follows.
1. The duration of pain relief after operation was average 4 hrs. and 40 min. in the control group, 23 hrs. and 40 min. in 2nd group and 27 hrs. and 55 min. in 3rd group.
2. The duration of pain relief after operation increased significantly in both group 2nd and 3rd. compared with the control group. But there was no significant difference between group 2nd and 3rd.
3. Complications were nausea, dizziness, pruritis and urinary retention and similar in both group 2nd and 3rd.
